Sailing with a dog into Stonehaven

Updated: Oct 1

ree

This was a flying visit - literally. After a choppy sail from Arbroath, Pete moored up against the harbour wall at 19:30, just before low water. While Svea has many amazing skills, we have not taught her to climb a ladder yet - so we taught her to fly instead. The spinnaker halyard and a winch helped with the acrobatics, and Svea reached dry land at 19:45.

Jen arrived with the new autopilot at 22:00 to find the whole boat asleep. After descending a 5m ladder onto Rimau, the yacht was awakened and a quick nightcap was had before bed, as we were leaving on the next high tide.

🐾 Dog-Friendliness of Stonehaven Harbour and Marina

  • Marina Policy: There wasn't really a marine here for larger yachts, just a wall with ladders on which to moor. Dogs are welcome and don't need to be on a lead in the harbour area.

  • Facilities: Very basic facilities with no electricity. Showers and toilets were clean. The marina is centrally located, offering immediate access to beaches, promenades, and scenic walks. The harbour master was not about at arrival however at 04:00 he was available for due payment and advice.

  • Local Attitude: Stonehaven is known for being dog-friendly, with many locals and visitors enjoying walks with their dogs along the coast and in town.

🧭 Tips for Visiting Sailors with Dogs

  • Stonehaven Beach is perfect for quick off-lead fun, just steps from the marina.

  • For a longer adventure, consider the Dunnottar Castle Walk, keeping your dog on a lead due to cliffs and wildlife. We did not have time to try this walk out.

  • Cowie Beach offers a more relaxed environment with open spaces suitable for dogs.

  • Verdict:  Svea gave Stonehaven eight paws 🐾🐾🐾🐾.
