Eastbourne, tucked between Beachy Head and Hastings, is a surprisingly good stop for cruising yachts. The modern Sovereign Harbour Marina is one of the largest on the South Coast, with all-weather access and friendly staff on hand to help with berthing. For us, it was the perfect mix of practicality and welcome, and Svea had just as good a time as we did.
⚓ The Approach
Sovereign Harbour has a lock entrance, which means it’s accessible in all tides and conditions, a huge relief after some of the more tidal harbours we’ve battled with. VHF instructions were clear, and the lock staff are used to guiding visiting yachts through. Once inside, you’ll find wide, well-kept basins and excellent facilities. The lock only operates once every 30 minutes, so keep this in mind on the departing leg. We had breakfast in the lock waiting for the next opening.
🐶 Marina Dog Policy
Dogs must be on a lead on pontoons and walkways.
Grassy patches are available near the marina complex for quick breaks.
Plenty of footpaths nearby for longer strolls, so it’s easy to keep tails wagging.
Svea loved hopping on and off Rimau here - very dog-friendly compared to many South Coast stops.
🌿 Dog-Friendly Walks in Eastbourne
Eastbourne Seafront Promenade: A classic stroll, flat and stretching for miles, with beach sections where dogs are welcome outside of summer restrictions. To access the front, cross the two locks and follow the coast. Just be aware of the tourist train and bikes on the promenade.
Shinewater Park: Just inland from the marina, this is perfect for longer dog walks with plenty of open space, water, and trails.
Sovereign Harbour Walks: The marina itself is surrounded by footpaths and waterside cafés, great for shorter leg stretches.
🍻 Sovereign Harbour Yacht Club (SHYC)
The highlight of Eastbourne for visiting sailors is the SHYC. Unlike many yacht clubs that feel closed-off, SHYC is genuinely welcoming to visitors.
Dogs are allowed inside the clubhouse 🐕, a rare treat for Svea.
The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, with locals keen to share sailing stories.
Drinks are reasonably priced, especially compared to some of the more exclusive clubs along the Solent.
Food is hearty, affordable, and perfect after a long day’s sail.
For us, SHYC was a reminder that yacht clubs can be sociable, affordable, and dog-inclusive all at once. Thank you for your welcome.
⛵ Skipper’s Tips
Locks: Factor in waiting time for the lock when planning your arrival or departure - though staff keep things moving smoothly.
Facilities: Fuel berth, showers, and chandlery are all on site, making it easy to restock or do quick maintenance.
Shelter: The basins are very well protected, making this a stress-free stop whatever the weather.
🐾 Final Thoughts
Eastbourne might not have the historic charm of Cowes or the bustle of Brighton, but it delivers everything a cruising sailor (and their dog) could want: safe berthing, great walks, and a yacht club that proves hospitality doesn’t have to be expensive or exclusive.
Verdict: Svea gave Eastbourne an enthusiastic tail wag and an 8 paw rating - 🐾🐾🐾🐾
