Rimau departed Bridlington at 05:00 and sailed into a pod of dolphins. A sea lion also popped his head up amongst the lobster pots. The intention was to head to Whitby, however the wind had other ideas. A two meter tear to the jib and two loose battens forced us to change course in order to repair the sails. Despite the gusts exceeding 30 knots, the sun was shining, and the views along the Yorkshire coast were stunning. After bidding farewell to 'God's own country', we crossed the Tees and moored safely in Hartlepool marina.
The local sailmaker collected our genoa for repairs. As luck would have it, he has a yacht himself in Blyth, so Pete will motor there on Monday—a day ahead of schedule. A three-day break enabled us to catch up on washing, cleaning, and boat maintenance. Hartlepool has a lot to offer weary sailors.
🐾 Dog-Friendliness of Hartlepool Harbour Marina
Harbour/Marina Policy: Dogs are welcome off-lead, and many sailors own pets.
Facilities: No dog-specific facilities on site; however, there is grass just over the lock for a quick walk, and plenty of bins (not dog-specific) around the marina.
Access: The marina is central to an expansive array of restaurants and nightlife. This is where the ladies of Hartlepool come for bottomless brunches and a night out. Unfortunately, Svea was too tired to join the party.
Local Attitude: Hartlepool is a very dog-friendly town, with plenty to do within walking distance of the marina.
🌿 Top Dog Walks in and Around Hartlepool
Seaton Carew Beach & Promenade
This is a refreshing 1.8-mile seaside stroll along the promenade from Hartlepool to Seaton Carew. The expansive sandy beach is perfect for dogs to run and play. While dogs are welcome year-round, be mindful of designated no-dog zones along the promenade.
Summerhill Country Park
Spanning over 100 acres, this park offers diverse terrains, including woodlands and meadows. It’s equipped with dog agility courses and is popular among local dog walkers. Free parking and off-lead areas make it a convenient choice.
Headland Sea Watch
This 4-mile route begins at Hart Warren Dunes and offers stunning coastal views. Along the way, you’ll pass attractions like Spion Kop Cemetery and the Heugh Gun Battery Museum. It’s a peaceful walk with rich history. The start of this walk is unfortunately along a busy A Road; however, it is worth the wait.
Ward Jackson Park
A beautifully maintained Victorian park in the heart of Hartlepool, featuring serene lakes and well-kept lawns. Dogs are welcome in designated areas, and there’s a café with outdoor seating where you can relax together.
Ramble in the Dene
Starting from Hart Village, this 4.5-mile walk takes you through farmland and woodland, leading to Haswell Local Nature Reserve. It’s a moderate trek with some steep sections, ideal for more adventurous walkers.
🍻 Dog-Friendly Pubs in Hartlepool
Our explorations started at the Hartlepool Yacht Club. Whilst the centre was full of activity and the views incredible, Svea was clearly not welcome here.
The marina offers many restaurants a two-minute walk from the boat that are dog-friendly. We particularly liked the newly opened Greek restaurant Limanki, and Wallis and Co for Sunday lunch.
The Pot House:
A cozy spot known for its friendly atmosphere and selection of ales. Dogs are welcome inside.
The Fisherman’s Arms:
Located near the marina, this pub offers a relaxed setting with outdoor seating perfect for you and your dog.
The Jacksons Arms:
A traditional pub with a warm ambience. Dogs are allowed in the bar area.
O'Malley's:
Irish bar with Caffrey's on tap. Lovely chesterfield furniture and large screens perfect for the VI Nations. A homely atmosphere with excellent beer.
Many pubs in Hartlepool are dog-friendly, especially those with outdoor seating. We didn't mind being here for three day's recovery. I unfortunately am back to work in London tomorrow, so bid farewell to Svea and Pete for two weeks.
