Sailing with a dog into Glenarm

Updated: Oct 1

Tucked into the County Antrim coast, Glenarm is one of Northern Ireland’s oldest and most beautiful harbour villages. It’s tranquil, traditional, and steeped in charm - a peaceful place to drop anchor and unwind with your dog by your side.

⚓️ Glenarm Marina:

  • 40 serviced pontoon berths

  • Electricity, toilets, showers, laundry, and diesel

  • VHF Channel 80 for contact on arrival

Dogs at the Marina Pets are welcome on leads. There are no strict rules posted, just standard marina courtesy: clean up after your pup, and keep them controlled on pontoons. Svea settled right in with the peaceful vibe - the whole place feels calm and respectful.

🌿 About Glenarm Village

Glenarm is predominantly a Protestant village and carries a strong sense of history and community. It’s beautifully kept, with old stone buildings, narrow lanes, and a quiet, respectful atmosphere.

Though small, Glenarm has essentials:

  • One convenience store (perfect for stocking up)

  • Two pubs, both with very different vibes for dog owners (more below).

It’s also famous for Glenarm Castle, which remains a focal point of the town’s identity and hosts seasonal events, gardens, and artisan food.

🐶 Walks & Outdoor Time

While you won’t find coastal rambles here, Glenarm does offer one particularly rewarding nature escape.

No Coastal Walks or Road to Madman’s Window

Unfortunately, walking along the scenic Coast Road or to the dramatic "Madman’s Window" is not possible on foot - there’s no pedestrian-safe access.

Glenarm Forest Walk

Instead, Svea and Pete have been enjoying runs through Glenarm Forest, a lovely shaded trail above the river. The air is fresh, and the ground is soft for paws and hiking boots alike. The river itself is peaty, and interestingly, excellent for a dog’s fur - Svea came out shinier than ever.

🍕 Food, Drink & Dog-Friendly Spots

Bridge End Tavern

One of Glenarm’s two pubs — unfortunately not dog-friendly. You’ll have to leave your companion aboard or outside.

Coast Road Inn

This pub is very dog-friendly. Svea and Pete were both warmly welcomed - she was even treated to a snack! Great for a cozy evening drink after a forest stroll.

Pizza at Glenarm Castle

Tonight, I’ll be trying out the Pizza Bar at Glenarm Castle - it’s well-reviewed and beautifully set among the estate grounds. While I haven’t confirmed yet if it’s dog-friendly indoors, it often has outdoor seating for well-behaved pups.

⛵️ Final Notes

Glenarm is not a bustling port, and that’s exactly what makes it so special. It’s a quiet, historic, and deeply peaceful place. You and your dog won’t find flashy trails or nightlife, but you will discover calm forest walks, friendly locals, and a chance to truly rest.

Svea and Pete left Glenarm feeling refreshed and welcomed. Whether you're on a grand circumnavigation or just passing through, it’s a wonderful harbour for reconnecting with your dog, your boat - and yourself.

Verdict:  Svea gave Glenarm eight paws 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾.
