Full Circle: Sailing Around the UK with a Dog

Updated: Feb 12

After 130 days at sea and 2,025 nautical miles sailed over 46 legs, our circumnavigation of the UK is complete. From the rugged cliffs of Cornwall to the remote beauty of the Scottish Highlands, we’ve had the privilege of sailing through every Celtic nation.

The Journey Begins

It’s hard to capture what this adventure has meant. There were calm, golden dawns that made us feel like the only boat on the water. Then, there were days when the seas tested every ounce of our seamanship. We encountered harbours that welcomed us like old friends. And we sailed along stretches of wild coastline where the only company was seabirds wheeling overhead.

Svea: Our Sailing Companion

Svea, our intrepid Bernese Mountain Dog, has been at the heart of it all. She’s proven that a big dog really can live a big sailing life. While Pete kept the boat safe and steady, Jen did her best to capture the magic along the way.

A Deeper Connection

We set out to sail around Britain, but what we really found was a deeper connection to its waters, its people, and to each other. This journey has been more than just sailing; it’s been a reminder that big dreams, no matter how daunting, are worth chasing.

The Adventure Continues

The circumnavigation may be complete, but the adventure isn’t over. We’ll be sharing more stories, tips, and reflections soon. For now, thank you for following, supporting, and sailing with us in spirit.

Tips for Sailing with Your Dog

Preparing for the Journey

Before you set sail, it’s essential to prepare. Make sure your dog is comfortable on the boat. Start with short trips to get them used to the motion. Bring their favourite toys and a comfy bed. This will help them feel at home.

Safety First

Safety is paramount when sailing with a dog. Invest in a good life jacket for your furry friend. Ensure they have a secure space on the boat where they can relax. Keep an eye on them, especially during rough weather.

Finding Dog-Friendly Ports

Not all ports are dog-friendly. Research ahead of time to find harbours that welcome dogs. Some places even have dog parks nearby! This way, your pup can stretch their legs after a long sail.

Keeping Your Dog Entertained

Long days at sea can be boring for dogs. Bring along puzzle toys or chew toys to keep them entertained. Regular breaks on land are also a great way to let them explore and burn off some energy.

Health and Wellbeing

Keep your dog’s health in mind while sailing. Bring enough food and water for the journey. Make sure they have their regular medications and a first aid kit. It’s also a good idea to have a vet’s contact information handy in case of emergencies.

Conclusion: Here’s to the Next Horizon

We’ve shared our journey, but there’s so much more to come. The adventure of sailing with a dog is filled with challenges and joys. We hope to inspire you to embark on your own sailing adventures.

Here’s to the next horizon!
