Sailing with a dog into Ballycastle

Updated: Oct 1

⛳ Why We Changed Marina Plans: The British Open at Portrush

Originally, we had considered making a stop at Portrush Harbour but as it turns out, timing is everything. The British Open Championship, one of golf’s most prestigious events, is being held at Royal Portrush Golf Club this week. That means the town and its marina are jam packed with visitors, media, players, and support crews. Plans therefore changed and Pete moored at Ballycastle instead.

Being so close to the Open, the team had to go and check out the course. Both took the bus to Portrush and inadvertently found themselves walking on a coastal path close to the third hole. A beady eyed security guard spotted them and politely asked them to leave. Spotting a good story, a Danish reporter saw what had happened and requested an interview with Svea.

⚓ Arrival by Water

Ballycastle Marina is a modern, Blue Flag 74‑berth harbour accommodating boats up to 20 m, complete with showers, toilets, laundry, Wi‑Fi and 24‑hour pin-code access. It’s well protected in the inner basin, making it a calm spot to arrive after a day’s sail from Scotland or Ireland. The current between Ballycastle and Rathlin is very strong (8 knots in Springs) so needs careful planning.

🐾 Is the Marina Dog-Friendly?

Dogs are warmly welcomed at the marina however must be kept on a lead. Outside the harbour, Ballycastle Beach is dog-friendly (with seasonal restrictions) and perfect for walks and splashing in the surf

🥾 Great Walks Around Ballycastle

  1. Ballycastle Beach & Pans Rocks – Sandy Blue Flag beach at the east end of town, ideal for a refreshing shoreline stroll. Great for swimming and making other canine friends. Svea loved this beach.

  1. Fair Head & Knocklayde Climb – A dramatic coastal ascent right behind the town, with panoramic vistas of Rathlin Island and Scotland

  2. Harbour to Kinbane Castle – Coastal path taking in dramatic sea cliffs and the ruins of Kinbane Castle, just a few miles west. Another stunning walk.

  3. Rathlin Island ferry – Short crossing to explore rugged trails and seabird colonies; dogs aboard are welcome on leashes

You can walk to the Giants Causeway from Ballycastle, but it takes over 3 hours, so it's not for the faint-hearted.

🍻 Pubs & Cafés Worth Your Anchor

The Safehouse bar (Portrush)

  • Very friendly bar close to both the marina and golf course. Known for its pizza's and cocktails. Pete kept to the Guinness. Lots of treats and attention for Svea.
